Awesome! I've been reading a lot and a reliable OC to 4.0GHz looks very attainable. I guess as long as we can keep it all nice and cool it should be sweet.

Looking forward to it!

Hey ho,

Right I've got some more questions before I finally jump into the deep end this week.

I've settled on an i7 920.

What I wanted to know about is memory speeds, motherboard speeds and their relationship to the CPU and each other.

My plan is to water cool the CPU to somewhere around 4.0Ghz. The reason I've settled on WC as opposed to a good air cooling system is as follows:

- I'll be using it in a fairly small room (not the small room sometimes known as the.... WC) so a WC set-up will reduce noise.

- I want a stable OC, not one that will poop itself in a year or two due to heat stress. I understand that, even on a good air cooling system, the 920 will run at heats approaching 80C at around 4GHz. I'd like to keep temps as low as possible. We don't have air-conditioning at home, so it isn't unusual for temperatures to hit 30c in doors.

- Possibility of stretching the OC beyond 4GHz if the WC systems lowers temps sufficiently.

- Water Cooling is cool. Literally and metaphorically.

So that's my thinking with the CPU.

Now we get to the Motherboard. I've seen Asus P6Ts that come overclocked at 2000MHz. What exactly does this mean? What effect does it have?

Similarly, I've seen sticks of memory that come out with speeds as high as 2133MHz. For the purpose of this exercise we'll rule that memory out and think about sticks of up to 2000MHz.

What I want to know is, for argument's sake, if I was to match an OC'ed i7 at 4MHz, a MoBo that runs at 2000MHz, and memory running at 2000MHz, would this be a decent setup? Would it actually be (as I suspect) a very good set-up or would I run into issues that I'm not thinking about/don't know?

I've been led to believe that 2000MHz memory is less stable for minor improvements in performance. What I've been unable to find out is whether these people are using a 2000MHz compatible motherboard. Plenty of forums post the question about whether 2000MHz is worth it, but I'm really struggling to find info on 2000MHz Mobos and whether they alleviate the problem or whether they're a worthwhile investment.

Please bare in mind that I want to leave some sort of head room so that I don't have to replace components on such a regular basis. I understand that, strictly speaking, I probably don't need to go for memory with higher clocks than 1333MHz.

What are your thoughts?

One frustrating thing I'm finding in shopping around for a system is all of the conflicting information I'm getting from retailers. Nobody seems to be able to give me good advice, let alone decent service. Fer chrissake! I want to spend $5000 in your store. Surely it can't be too hard to sit me down for half an hour and take me through all the things I need to know....?

if you want to run 4ghz, then that give you a 200 blck speed = to roughly a 2000 fsb in laymans terms, 1600 mhz memory is sufficiant, but memory is really cheap now cheaper than it has ever been , 1866, 2100 2300mhz you can een get now, but for a 200 blck oc ( stock is 133) 1600 is ok.

You want the lowest memory timings, then speed you can afford, do not go below 1600 mhz, but anything above this will give you headroom, there is no exact science as with every chip, each chip , and or motherboard will overclock differantly, this is why you allways get the best motherboard you can afford, then memory second then cpu third, your oc is only going to be as strong as the weakest link.

This can be cooling first, motherboard second memory third then cpu fourth, oh and user abillity and knowedge.

Rev is right. I havnt clocked i7's before but I heard the architechture is different to the 775s. (could be wrong though). Just be careful with WC. I ran a box for 4 years on WC and never had a problem. Made sure I benched it overnight so there were no leaks. My water cooling lasted for 4 years but my overclocked box didnt. I went through 3 mobos and 3 sets of ram.

BUt now i got this.

Eyefinity. Still waiting for an adaptor to get the third screen up. Buts its sweet. Havnt oced yet.

Oh, by the way Spank.... Nice Toes!!! Is that a Megahalems cooler you've got hanging off the CPU?

Would it surprise anyone to find out that I've changed my mind again?!?

I've decided to brush Water Cooling. This was very much triggered by a chat with a fella called Adam at Ecom Computers in the City. He actually sat me down and, piece by piece asked me why I wanted each piece. He listened and finally said "Look, I'd be happy to sell you this stuff, but we've been here 14 years. We don't sell crap. On your budget you're going to buy a pre-made WC system that has inferior performance than a good air cooled setup by the likes of Zalman. Come out the back". He takes me out the back and says "This here is a $12,000 gaming rig (with 2 x 5970's!!!). See the benchmark" (4.2GHz) "Notice something missing?" (Liquid Cooling) "This has been stress testing for just under 48 hour completely stable, feel the (copper) fins" (Warm but not hot). "i7s run very hot" He brought up a temperature reading and it was running at 74C. "I guarantee that pre-fab water cooling kits will run hotter, unless you pay big bucks for a good, custom WC, you'll get better performance from a good air cooled setup. People like the sound of WC, it looks cool, but unless you're running big clocks (over 4.2) with a $700 to $1000 setup, you're wasting your money. We aren't the cheapest, but we standby everything that goes out the door, we'll give you a three year warranty when it does"

It took me three months to find a decent store giving decent advice. I slapped down my $5000 there and then.

Way to make a sale Adam...

Nice PC Spanks.

Pete good water cooling doesnt come cheap. amd it has its pitfalls, I have had 2 leaks 1 blown GPU due to the leaks, and a dead pump, but this was after 3 years, but I am like Spanks now I am back on Air cooling, running a Noctua setup.
