Default More computer questions

To you guys wot know,

I'll (finally) be buying a new computer in January.

To cut a long story short, is there any reason at all I wouldn't do the following?

1 x 128gb SSD for operating system.

2 x 300gb Velociraptors in RAID 0.

I understand that in RAID 0 there is no redundancy, so if I lose one disk, I lose both. This is why I've decided to install the operating system to SSD (apart from the speed advantages).

Another line of thinking was to install 2x64gb or 2x128gb SSD in RAID 0 as my budget may be able to stretch that far. In other words I'd potentially have 2 RAID controllers, on for the HDDs and another for the SSDs.

Thoughts?

In a more general way, if price is roughly equal, is there any reason at all you wouldn't go for 2 disks in RAID 0 configuration rather than one disk. From what I've seen the speed advantages are pretty phenomenal and the cost isn't a great deal more...

1 ssd for operating system is a good move, the 2 hdds in raid 0 is allso a good choice, though you have to be discaplined, and not install files to there default paths, so you would install all your downloads movies , games into there relevant folders you custom created onto you veloci raptor raid partition.

I have 4 veloci raptors in raid 0 and touch wood they havnt failed, they are made for server so enviroment to mean time to failure is 5 years.

2 ssds in raid 0 is compromising space, I think the first option is better, but thats just me.

My setup is 4 veloci raptors in raid 0, mine ar the 80gb versions not the 300gb ones, and 2 1tb Westerd digital green drives in raid 1 for backup.

While I am here Scorpy wanted to know why you havnt been online playing eve?

Funny you mention that because I first heard of the 5970 today. Is it that much better?

For $1000 au for a 5970 is it worth it thats up to you, but you get double the performance to a 295 and DX11, but if you get a 5870 you get a DX11 card and = to and sometimes a little faster than a 295, if I was you I would get the 5870, because you can run DX11 in the future and the card uses allmost half the wattage of a 295 and is allso fairly cheap, but if you can afford 2 solid state drives then whats a 5970 " chump change lol" im only joking

Hey Code what yah been up 2 mate?

Hi Rev, mainly been racing in rfactor and Gtr2 leagues.
Arma was pissing me off, the new one aint that great either, if BF Bc 2 is any good i'll hop back in for some fps action.

I mentioned the 5970 to Pete because it looks like he can afford it, looking at the rest of his specs, plus it'll last him a bit longer in the long run like you said.

Might hop on vent sometime for a yarn.
